Mr. Saltwater Tank Visits Mandalay Bay’s Shark Reef Aquarium

Everybody wants a bigger tank, but how does 1.6 MILLION gallons sound to you?

I visited The Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay and got a personal backstage tour by the Animal Curator Jack Jewel. Of course, I brought my camera man and here’s what I saw:

I visited The Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay last year. I enjoyed it and was certainly worth the price of admission. In addition to the sharks, they also have a nice assortment of reef fishes. The largest Unicorn Tangs they have are the largest I’ve seen in captivity…. with very long horns. They also have an impressive Moon Jelly Fish display. I was not graced with a behind the scenes tour though, but I’ll try and do that next time I’m in Vegas.

    Kudos Mark! Another great interview…

I’ve been to Vegas three times and never new the sharks exhibit existed. Starting out in this hobby has just opened tons of doors to all sorts of information and avenues that I may have never experienced otherwise. Keep up the great work Mark.

Awesome! I was there when I was young, this brings back memories!

    Nice tour Mark!

I’ve been to shark reef in Mandalay Bay before but it’s rather small and I wasn’t to impressed with it. Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach is 100 x better

Thanks for the peek at the inner workings! I really enjoyed visiting the Mandalay Bay tank myself a few years back but seeing the operations makes it even cooler. Well done on this report!

Another great video! You’ve really been pumping them out lately! I am anxiously awaiting the next installment of the LED experiment, as I am thinking about getting some. Keep the videos coming!

  • Gary says:

Hey Mark do you know wHat LEDs they use on the main exhibit?

  • Gary…they are made in-house. MGM resorts has 12 properties (with Mandalay Bay being one of them) and I was told they are quickly moving to 100% LEDs. Since the Shark reef is basically a FOWLR tank, any LED will do as long as it is bright so they just make their own!

  • Dennis…check your inbox..I sent you an email.
