Nifty … I think I’ll peruse a popular auction site or nip to my local Iron Mongers (hardware store for you over the pond types 😉 ) … Nice Jessica … 😀

Ben … Mark records tips and so on weeks or months in advance … 😉

I use my shoulder as a towel holder. it always seems to be around when i need it. a wet towel hanging on the front of the tank can mess up the glass display.

  • Co says:

    Mark,

Thanks for the Friday towel tip. I am new reef tank enthusiast, love my tank and its inhabitants the fish and coral. However, I am struggling to reach the appropriate ph level, stuck at 7.5 with my 75gal tank. I have been added 1.5 teaspoons of a ph supplement yet no change after 6 doses. Any suggestions? Thanks and keep sending the tips.

I use the fancy shoulder trick too Dheeraj. ;). I also have a baby gate leading into the kitchen next to my tank so there is ALWAYS a towel hanging there.

  • Andrew says:

+1 over the shoulder. And i try to keep one in the stand

  • Tom says:

Can I add a quick tip to the tip? I’m going to any way lol, I’ve not got a big tank like mark demonstrated there, but DON’T slide the hanger along the tank to follow you, I.e your working on the right side of the tank, and you slide it along to follow you. This will avoid scratching the outside of the tank! Just a thought mainly! But great tip I’m off to buy one now thanks Jessica!

  • Matt says:

Lisa … towel over the baby gate leading into the kitchen? Small world … 😀

I find I lean over the tank and dip the towel in if I put it over my shoulder … :/

  • Steve Dodd says:

just hang it round your neck , simples

  • Jessica says:

Ahaha hey that was me! I meant it a little more for the cabinet/sump area, but it works there too! Thanks for taking the tip, Mark!

    Mark,
With towels and other tools do you sterlize them?
If so how do you do it? As a algae cleaner.

  • P.Bouic says:

Good idea Mark, just a thought to all, whether your yank is made from glass or Acrylic remember the scratch risk & apply the hardness scale to that towel hook, it goes, Steel= 10, Glass= 6, Acrylic=4, so either put a plastic cap on the tip of the hook, or use a plastic one. It reminds me of a guy who told me he’d discovered that using a stainless steel scraper took all that hard to remove algae off his glass on the inside. I had to tell him dude get a flash light & shine it on the back your glass front. He rand me back almost in tears, someone else told me she save time by using steel wool for the same job. I think you all know where I’m going with this, steel beats glass, & glass will scratch acrylic, even thin glass will scratch thicker glass, don’t do it.

I add air to my salt water tank. I put an aerator in the tank. Does that hurt or help the fish?
    Thank You Jim

  • Bill Hurley says:

Are we maybe over thinking this???? Hang it out of your pocket stuff it in yor belt put it on your shoulder. Really isn’t a hook over kill.

  • Andrew Knight says:

Its funny how we never think of things so simple like this lol….i used this tip last night and its probably the best tip ever my floor was saved from getting wet due to looking for where i last set my towel lol and no wet socks either!!!

  • Jim…an aerator won’t hurt the fish and if you don’t overstock the tank and have a skimmer, or a tank with a sump, the aerator very likely isn’t needed.

  • Bill Hurley and others who suggested the shoulder method…a shoulder can work as long as you aren’t getting both hands, or having to reach far into the tank. I used to try the shoulder method and the towel either touched the water when I had to get both hands in the tank, OR it feel off my shoulder while I reached in the tank. Highly annoying !

  • Chris Bena says:

You know what else that over-the-door hook is good for? Tom’s Aqualifter. It fits perfectly in the “J” side of the hook and you can zip tie the top of the pump for a secure fit. I have mine hung on the back of my sump for my ATO.
