Lisa…you can still get detritus build up in a sump even with filter socks. Some detritus will get through.
Placing a sock over the canister filter intake likely wouldn’t work as there is enough flow into the canister filter it’d likely plug the intake. And you’d still get detritus into the canister filter as some would get through.
