Great tip, but maybe a bit of ill timing being that you just sold a $6500 tank. I’m not saying it was wrong but its kind of like the first lady telling people to exercise right after you just saw her just eating an ice cream cone. (…not bashing, just saying.)
Great idea! I’ll be doing this but with a twist. I’m moving from a 55gal freshwater setup to a 180 gal saltwater setup. Now I know what to do with the freshwater setup instead of selling it for dirt cheap online or back to the LFS.
I don’t know… Introducing poor people to such an expensive hobby?
I mean, as I was watching the video I thought it was a great idea for when I upgrade my tank and I even thought about a women shelter I know… then I started thinking about how I woudn’t give my fish away so they would have to stock it, and that any fish they want to put in would costs at least 5 day’s worth of food for one of these women (and that’s only if they stick to damsels jaja) and how a single 20% water change costs at least that same amount in salt and purified water. Not to mention the increase in their electric bill!
I’m not sure this is a gift they would appreciate… at least here in México
But thank you for the tip Mark, can’t wait to see your new tank!!
Love the idea of paying it forward. We have a similar system at our reef club. We get the members to donate old 2nd hand equipment, then set up tanks for those who we recognise as not being able to afford a tank but still long to have one (be it an individual or shelter or home etc)
I think maybe donating the gear and setting up a fresh water tank for the types of institutions you mention would be more feasible from an monetary upkeep–and skills/knowledge base needed to maintain the tank on an ongoing basis.
On your Friday morning quick tip mail out–you might want to update your physical mailing address–it is still showing your Austin address in the e-mail.
Grant, I understand what you’re saying but before you make a comment you might think about how applicable it is. When Mark left Austin he donated all sorts of equipment, sand, and live rock to new members of our local fish club. There’s nothing wrong with selling what you can and donating the rest. Many happy members here would take offense at your assumption, Mark definitely practices what he preaches.
Top tip Brian and thank you Mark for putting the tip to us… 🙂
Was thinking about what to do with my old tank when we get the new one… Think our lads Nursery had a rather dull corner that might enjoy a little reef brightening… 😀
Grant… Have a look around… enjoy the site… reap the benefits of all the information and advice available here… remember that this is his livelihood… note that only a very small section of the ENTIRE of Marks work over the years and his two decades of experience is a paid for thing… Enjoying it all… ??
I think Mark’s donated more than enough to the English speaking world of reefing already…. don’t you?
Oh and to the small percentage of people on You Tube that have given Mark and Brian’s video a thumbs down… You just stated that you think charity is a bad idea… I hope you like yourselves a lot right now… You muppets!
Sorry… had to have that little rant folks… just gets the old blood boiling!
Great idea Mark! I volunteer at the zoo here in Indy and I see the faces of the kids that have never seen a reef tank light up when they catch their first glance.
To those doubters out there, maybe not only giving something charitable, but actually doing something charitable like helping with cleaning and maintenance could do not only the organization good, but maybe yourselves.
Like I said, I’m not bashing Mark for selling his tank. Hell, I couldn’t afford to take the loss on donating my tank either. I think Mark is great and I think donating a tank to the less fortunate is an AWESOME idea!
My point was only that, for me, its hard to take seriously after just sold his tank and didn’t donate his himself. I never made the assumption that he’s not a giving person. He’s seems like a great dude and I’ve bought several guilds from him and he has answer several email questions too!
Mark, a dig what you do and as a Texas I hated to see you leave. I just thought the idea was too soon as a quick tip. Keep doing what you’re doing and don’t read into what I said as anything more than what I said.
Thanks Mark for using my tip. I thought it was a great idea after doing it for a home for the mentally challenged. They love it and sit in front of it all the time.
You guys do know that you don’t have to donate everything to set up a tank. You can get together with some of your aquarium friends and each donate something. It doesn’t have to come completely out of your own pocket. Just my 2 cents.
Hey Mark, I would like to submit this important issue I had with my skimmer.
Make sure when ever you are changing your water, or just when ever you and have to turn of main pump, that you turn your skimmer off first, or you can overflow all that skimmate right back into your sump, because some skimmers overflow when the water level changes!
no offence i love the work you do on this website i have learned a lot of info, but that being said your hair cut makes your head look like a tip of a body part lol. but you not alone the wife made me get a cut and it looks almost similar
Mark, nice thought, but donating general fish tank equipment I can see. The problem i see is people need to be already interested in keeping a aquarium other wise it gets nasty, the fish die, and then they get rid of it. So if you donate your stuff make sure they watch all your videos.

Also, moving sucks and I’m sure it’s been quite a change, what part of Tenn. are you in?
Excellent Tip. I must add that if you decide to do this, you’re probably going to have to keep returning to maintain the tank too. Still worth it in the end though!
Good tip Mark but your killing me… I see the stand in the back ground, no sneak peak?? 🙁
Great to see your 1st Quick Tip in the new homestead. Hope all is well for you and the family.
One of the best Tips Yet… Great Tip Brian!

Good tip, bad hair cut…Hey Moe!!!

Definitely a good tip. Another good place would be an anxiety or depression rehab facility. Those folks could definitely use some relaxing fishscapes.
Don’t forget a reciept for that charitable donation.

Hey mark I have a question about Rimless tanks
Are you concerned about the humidity it will bring to your house
Are you concerned about the smell
