Mr. Saltwater Tank TV Friday AM Quick Tip #120: The Important First Step For Shipped Saltwater Fish
I buy all the livestock (fish, coral, invertebrates) for my saltwater tank via online retailers. When the box arrives with my new saltwater friends, I always do this step first so that their transition to their new home is easy.

Hey, could you give us a list of online retailers you trust? 🙂
Hello Mark,
I am a huge fan from Brazil and I believe it would be great if you talk a little bit abou tanks with many tangs ….how they behave togheter. I have a Sohal, a Powder Blue and a Hepatus….in a 395g tank and I am thinking about a Naso blonde tang…. 🙂

Oh yeah, this is extremely overlooked by many of the worlds hobbyist.
Have you ever woke up to the sun in your eyes?! Oh boy the retinal damage. Same applies to all animals, especially small ones. When they look up at you and the solar eclipse of your 75w equivalent cfl bulb in your room it freaks them out. Its almost like when you get interrogated by the police for all those crimes they thought I did. Puts ya in shock!!
One great way to open these is to use a room with a dimmable lamp. Open it on the dark and slowly turn on the light via knob. Its not like you have to acclimate them for very long to room lighting. Its just a matter of it fading into light rather than all of the sudden.
Then comes the water acclimation 🙂 then what? Quarantine!
I’ve also been thinking about when you turn the lights on in the morning. If you haven’t got a dimmable fixture, you can partially block the light with foil or move the fixture so it’s not directly over the top of the tank, then slowly move things back into place.
Lisa, I buy all my fish from Live Aquaria and try to get them from the Diver’s Den section. Any fish I bring in is quarantined for at least 30 days. I buy more coral from several places, Vivid Aquariums, AquaSD, Live Aquaria and Cherry Corals.
Would like to know why you don’t purchase live stock from your local store. Do you get anything like equip, sand, rock etc. from locals. Any chance fish will arrive dead or in poor shape?
Hey Mark,
Wasnt sure where to ask my question at so I’ll just ask it here… I have a canister filter that has a uv sterilizer built in. If im trying to grow good healthy bacteria via a sump refugium will the uv sterilizer cancel out everything or only kill the bad stuff? Would it just be better to run the filter with the light turned off? Right now I dont have this tank set up yet. I want to plan it all out before I fill it up again. It is a 75 gallon that I’m going to make fish only. (chainlink eel, dwarf lion, stuff like that)
Thanks, Amanda
