great tip , right now i dont quite need a spare because well i only have a 30 without sump 😀 , so the only spare part i need is an extra heater *knocks on wood*
Great tip, another idea is to have two pumps running, that will together equel the same gph as one big one. That way if one goes out while your gone, there will still be one running.
It’s interesting how many may be infusing their tanks with one pump and no backup…myself included, although, I do have a backup impeller. I own a solid pump, but I know “it”, that will not be named can happen (: Mine is a Gen X PCX 40 pumping at about 12 head feet (:

Friday morning quick tip is ” Make sure your sump has the right amount of water in it, that in case of a power outage, you water level doesn’t overflow!

Good tip. I have backup pump for my tank also now as Mark said the outlet fitting needs to be the same size. Tip is to put a union fitting on both the return and backup pumps the same size that make it easy to change out the pumps without having to pull off a hose clamp and put off hose stuck on the fitting.
Nice tip… I need to replace my sump pump soon… I’ll probably step up my backup Ehiem at the same time as its probably seized through lack of use by now… 😛

lol … it probably will… and probably outlast whatever shiny new bit of kit I install instead of the current pump… The junkie in me just feels the need for new things… 😀

Also a good thing to know, i know at least ONE shop where i would be able to get a new pump in the middle of the night (if needed).
An other idea (added to this) if you got some reef friends close by, you just need one or two as long as you can get the pump at any time.
Kevin…certainly a strong reef club could have a couple of pumps on hand for members. Of course the person housing the pumps would had to be willing to pick up their phone in the middle of the night!
It is like having a lifted truck and no spare, no one thinks they will need it until do then your SOL. Good tip Carlos and Mark!!!
One thing I found is to use a true union on the outlet of my return pump, then I can switch it out with my spare pump in less than 5 min 🙂
